Welcome message by Gelfand Kausiyo
General Manager: Radio Broadcast Facilities (RBF)

Radio is South Africa’s biggest and most influential medium of communication. More South Africans listen to radio than they watch television and read print media combined and indeed a large portion of the country’s 44 million people rely on radio for up-to-date information and instant broadcasts.

It is therefore quite befitting that we introduce and indeed extend to you our very warm welcome to South Africa’s premier website – the biggest audio broadcast and production house in Africa: Radio Broadcast Facilities (RBF).

Radio has evolved over the years from the traditional radio broadcasting, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), Webcasting, Podcasting and today we are heading towards something called Visual Radio. These, together with other notable developments in audio broadcast and production, constitute major topics of discussion at every digital radio conference in the world today. User experience is undoubtedly the key driver behind the speed with which new and improved digital technologies are launched. Having broadcasters recognize that they must upgrade their equipment to catch up with the vast changes in the world of convergence and also respond to the modern lifestyles of different audiences, is quite some feat. RBF is proud to stand up and be counted as a major influential player in as far as the development of technology in radio broadcast, music recording and audio production in South Africa is concerned.

The biggest challenge facing SABC Radio today is the implementation of an audio archive solution to serve the organisation’s needs and comply with the conditions set out in the Promotion of Access to Information Act (Act 2 of 2000). Mass storage media, strategies for digitization, retro-conversion, retrieval strategies, database choice, pre-listening concepts and safety management are just some of the commonest terms characterizing boardroom meetings whenever digital audio archiving strategies are mapped out at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

RBF, the biggest business unit within the Technology Division of the SABC unveils ambitious plans to migrate the entire radio environment from analogue to digital, right from audio ingest, manipulation of audio for production purposes, quality control through to the signal distributor. With a massive national presence of more than 200 physical radio broadcast and production facilities, RBF has positioned itself to meet the complex challenges of delivering quality broadcasts on 19 radio stations broadcasting in 11 official languages. The most important thing is to create broadcast platforms that enable SABC Radio to create content that can complement the listener lifestyle.

It’s all about the listener not the technology.

A special welcome to YOU!
